Mark Zuckerberg, billionaire founder of Facebook, has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year.
If you're not already on friendly terms with the man identified as
bringing mates together online, here are the top ten things you need to
know about the man who brought us poking and incalculable amounts of
embarassing tagged photos.
1) Mark was born in 1984 in New York. Although raised Jewish, he has
since described himself as an atheist despite having his Bar Mitzvah
when he was 13.
2) His father, Edward, began teaching him basic programming before
hiring experienced software developer David Newman to tutor him
privately - Newman aptly named him the "prodigy" .
3) He studied at the high school Phillips Exeter Academy where he won
prizes in maths, astronomy and physics. His college application listed
the ability to read and write in French, Latin, Hebrew and Ancient
Greek.
4) A year before release, Zuckerberg created a primitive version of
AOL Instant Messenger which enabled the computers in his home and
father's office to communicate with each other.
5) While studying in high school, he invented the Synopse Media
Player, an application which used artificial intelligence to predict a
user's listening habits and suggest songs. AOL offered to buy the rights
for the music player but instead the boy genius opted for university.
6) Zuckerberg attended Harvard and majored in computer science and
psychology. It was here he developing projects that linked course mates
and student residences together.
7) After building CourseMatch and Facemash, Zuckerberg launched the
almighty Facebook from his dormitory in February 2004. The project
started solely for Harvard students but then networked onto other
schools with the help of his roommate before it became one of the most
visited websites in the world.
8) Major corporations have offered to buy out Facebook but with a
personal fortune of an estimated $7 billion, he turned down the bids and
admitted he makes enough money he isn't tempted to sell-up.
9) On The Social Network, the film based on his life and the creation
of Facebook, Zuckerburg said: "I just wished that nobody made a movie
of me while I was still alive".
10) As well as his latest accolade, he was named number one in
Vanity Fair's 'most influential people of the Information age' and the
youngest winner of Time magazine's Person of the Year since 1927 -
beating the Queen by two weeks when she was bestowed with the title in
1952.
It's a decent résumé for someone who left university without a
degree. I suppose he can join some of the other drop outs like Richard
Branson and Bill Gates in a Starbucks and play on their laptops.
