The
following selection of sexy flicks can stand the test of time.
We have deliberately left out choices like Basic Instinct or 9 ½ Weeks, because we feel they are
too obvious and already have a sort of dated quality about them.
On the other hand, Jane Fonda languishing on furry rugs in Barbarella still tickles us the way it did decades ago, Kathleen Turner
in Body Heat still makes us sweat, and Bertolucci’s
sublime Last Tango in Paris will never get out
from under our skin.
Barbarella (1968)
Aside from watching Jane Fonda frolic in various
sexy space-age outfits (and even nude) on her mission to stop
the evil Duran-Duran, Roger Vadim’s classic
sex-ploitative
sci-fi tale really is wildly entertaining. The
entire film
is pure eye candy, at times verging on tasteful
soft-porn.
But Fonda is perfect as a doll, and we love that
it’s
unintentionally tongue-in-cheek.
Last tango In Paris (1972)
Inspired by the raw art of Francis Bacon, Bernardo Bertolucci tells the story of a young Parisienne and her sordid affair with an older American (Marlon Brando). Highly controversial when it first came out, considered obscene by some and the most erotic movie ever by others, it is as powerful today as it was then. Bertolucci said of the girl’s character that he wanted her like Lolita but more perverse.
Gia (1998)
If you think Angelina Jolie is hot now, imagine what she was like in the last millennium before she was a multiple mom with her many international Mother Theresa-like do-gooder roles. Back then, Mrs. Brad Pitt-to-be was one of if not THE hottest woman around, an impossibly sexy tattooed badass who wore a vial of blood around her neck. Her title role as the tragic Wilhelmina agency top model Gia Carangi who got hooked on heroin and died from AIDS at the age of 26 allows fans of Angelina and appreciators of beautiful woman everywhere to enjoy her when she was at her juiciest and most beguiling, fully nude and oozing sensuality. While the biopic's subject matter is certainly not uplifting, her stunning beauty, sexy photo shoots and affair with a make-up artist (played by Elizabeth Mitchell, whom you may know as Dr. Juliet Burke from "Lost") make for super sexy screen material.
Caligula (1979)
Although recklessly graphic, “Caligula” is also high cinematic expression, showcasing the perversity and bombast of Rome under the rule of mad emperor Gaius Germanicus Caligula, played unforgettably by Malcolm McDowell. Be sure to get a hold of the full-length 160-minute version in all of its pornographic glory. And if you were as hooked on the HBO TV drama “Rome” as we were, “Caligula” will be especially appropriate as “supplemental research.”
Body Heat (1981)
This noirish thriller stars a deliciously young Kathleen Turner and William Hurt in a passionate affair that turns murderous. Florida during a heat wave is the steamy playground for this sultry drama, and Turner, who plays a married socialite, is a veritable sex goddess who delivered the unforgettable line: “You’re not very bright, are you? I like that in a man.”
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989)
Here's a sexy movie for you foodies! If you love
high art and the avant garde and don't mind a bit of violence and
scatology, this is a perfect film for you. This stylized study in
formalism — albeit a lavish one — revolves around the gourmet restaurant
La Hollandais. We cannot give away much of the completely over-the-top
plot without spoiling the movie for you. Suffice to say, things get
cooking in a way you wouldn't expect it!
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988)
Before the highly charged backdrop of the Prague
Spring
in 1960s Czechoslovakia, womanizer Tomas juggles
his love for the romantic Tereza (ingénue Juliette
Binoche)
with his lust for the free-spirited artist Sabina.
This adaptation of Milan Kundera's book is a sensuously philosophical
look at such abstract concepts as Nietzsche's eternal return, trust and
kitsch.
Henry And June(1990)
Based on the lives of writer Henry Miller; his wife, femme
fatale June; and Anais Nin of diary fame, this picture
paints 1930s Paris
in beguiling colors. The photography
is gorgeous, sometimes explicit, with erotically
charged moments shot in front of mirrors and many
quotable observations on love and sex that will please literary minds.
Sex And Lucia (2001)
While “Sex and Lucia” features beautiful women
(Paz Vega, Najwa Nimri and Elena Anaya) and beautiful scenery (the
island of Formentera in the Balearics), the plot is difficult to
unravel. Weaving past and present, fact and fiction, it concerns a
struggling writer always on the edge of tragedy and the amorous
entanglements that inspire his work. Sizzling on the beach wearing
nothing but mud in one scene, Vega has earned numerous awards for her
revealing role, including Spain's prestigious Goya Award.
In The Mood Of Love (2000)
Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung are neighbors in 1960s Hong Kong who are inevitably drawn together as they become convinced that their spouses are having an affair with one another. Helmed by a different director, “In the Mood for Love” could have been an existential period piece about loneliness and forbidden love, but in Wong Kar Wai's capable hands the sexual tension is drawn out with style and subtlety. The visual and aural impressions left by Cheung's short, fitted dresses and Nat King Cole's music cannot fail to lull the viewer into a languorous reverie.
