Ten Most Expensive Paintings Ever

Art, no matter what form it is (music, sketching, painting or even cooking), has always inspired me in ways I cannot explain. Secretly, I always aspired to be some sort of an artist. Art is creativity, and there is no price that is adequate for creativity especially if it’s good, rather you cannot put a price on creativity. Painting is one form of art that attracts huge sums of money no matter which part of the world it came from. I do not have the sophistication it takes to actually admire a painting. Believe me when I compiled the list of ten most expensive works below, I had no clue exactly what pulled in such incredible amount of money. Nevertheless, these paintings that I am about to list down for you are ten of the most expensive in the world to date. Maybe you can appreciate them better than I can.

10. JASPER JOHNS – FALSE START

Anne and Kenneth Griffin are the founders of Citadel Investment Group. They bought this particular painting in the year 2006. The painting was able to fetch $80,000,000. This figure made this painting one of the most expensive American paintings in the world. Johns is often described as a Neo-Dadaist. His subjects often include images or objects from popular culture. Those of you who know this artist must know him best because of his work ‘Flag’. He painted it after he dreamt of the American flag sometime around 1954 to 1955.

9. CLAUDE MONET- LE BASSIN AUX NYMPHEAS

This is one of the more famous paintings of the artist Claude Monet. ‘Le Bassin Aux Numpheas’ is a painting from the ‘water lilies’ series. This painting depicts a scene where the water lilies float on the water under the bridge. The painting became the most expensive painting sold by Monet in 2008. It was sold for $80,400,000. That’s almost double the last most expensive painting by Claude Monet.

8. VINCENT VAN GOGH – PORTRAIT DU DR GACHET

This used to be the most expensive painting ever when it was sold to a Japanese businessman in the year 1990. The painting was able to fetch $82,500,000. It was painted by Vincent Van Gogh (another very famous artist) a hundred years prior to its sale in 1890. This painting depicts the doctor of the famous painter. Vincent painted another painting that depicted his doctor.

7. FRANCIS BACON – TRIPTYCH 1976

Francis Bacon is an Irish painted and is known for his dark and evil paintings. Triptych is referred to a painting where three different panels of art create one image. The triptych 1976 was a collection of triptychs. This painting was sold in an auction in 2007 and was bought by a Russian billionaire and also the owner of the Chelsea football club. The  name of the guy is Roman Abramovich.

6. GUSTAV KLIMT – PORTRAIT OF ADELE BLOCH-BAUR II

This is another depiction of Adele Bloch-Baur by Gustav Klimt. Adele was the wife of Ferdinand Block-Buar, an industrialist. She was a big fan of Gustav. Gustav was an Austrian artist and Adele is the only woman he painted twice. This particular painting was sold for $88,936,000 back in 2006. I do not understand why this painting fetched in such a huge amount of money, but then again, who am I to judge these paintings.

5. PABLO PICASSO – DORA MAAR AU CHAT

It was estimated that this piece of greatness by Picasso would be sold for around 50,000,000 dollars. But in May 2006, this painting fetched around $95,216,000 at an auction. The painting was bought by a Russian who chose to stay anonymous. Dora was the mistress of Picasso and the picture has a cat right above the shoulder of Dora. Weird painting if you ask me.

4. PABLO PICASSO – GARCON A LA PIPE

I am sure you have heard this name. This particular painting is considered to be an average when you consider Picasso’s work. Garcon a la Pipe can be translated to ‘boy with pipe’. The painting was sold for $104,168,000. This figure makes it one of the more expensive paintings to be sold in an auction. The painting was sold in 2004 and interestingly that’s around a hundred years after the painting was painted (1905).

3. GUSTAV KLIMT – PORTRAIT OF ADELE BLOCH-BAUR I

This painting was subjected to a lot of controversy. It happens to be one of the two depictions of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Both of these depictions were painted by the same artist. The Austrian government forced an owner of this painting to return it to the original owner because the painting was stolen by the Nazis in the Second World War. The painting is owned by Ronald S. Lauder (the cosmetics heir). The painting is valued at $135,000,000.

2. WILLEM DE KOONING – WOMAN III

Willem De Kooning is also an abstract impressionist. From 1951 to 1953 Mr. Kooning painted six different Woman paintings. The one pictured above, the number III, was originally hung in Iran until it was declared unsuitable for public display. The Woman III was replaced by ‘the last Tahmasabi Shahnameh’. The financial billionaire, Steven Cohen, bought the painting for $137,500,000.

1. JACKSON POLLOCK – NO5 1948

Jackson Pollock is one of the mainstream artists of the 20th Century. He even managed to influence the European art. His early work was influenced by his teacher Benton. This painting is one of the most abstract impressions in the world. The painting was sold for $140,000,000. As you might be able to imagine, it was painted in the year 1948. The artist does not appeal to everyone’s taste but he is one of the best America has to offer. The painting is 8 feet by 4 feet. It is said that the painting was bought for the quoted price by a Mexican named David Martinez, however it is not a confirmed report.
There you go folks, I am sure you will be able to better appreciate these paintings. If money was no big deal, which of these paintings would you like to hang in your living room? I think I would go with one of the depictions of Adele Bloch; beautiful use of colors and what not. Let us know in the comments what you think.
